Since its inception in 1982, Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) has told an incredible story of development, advancement and growth. Now established as the third largest book fair in the world, SIBF has witnessed a huge transformation from its inaugural event through to its current 35th edition, which opens this Wednesday at Expo Centre Sharjah.
For three-and-a-half decades, SIBF has consistently developed and launched an array of initiatives, progressively expanding its exhibition space for participating publishing houses from across the globe. Attracting both Arab and international creative authors, publishers and literary sphere stakeholders, the fair has transitioned from being an annual book exhibition into an integrated cultural project, which in turn has transformed Sharjah and the UAE into a cultural platform for the region and the world.
SIBF has accelerated the pace with which it has advanced against other international book fairs to now rank as the world’s third largest in the field of selling and buying copyrights. In preparation for its bid to become the largest book fair in the world, SIBF has opened its doors to new projects and visions, which will be implemented in its soon-to-be new home. SIBF aims to reach 60 thousand square metres of floor space following its move - an area of more than twice its current size of approximately 25 thousand square metres.
The 35th edition of SIBF will see the participation of more than 1,681 publishing houses from 60 countries, with more than 1.5 million books on display. Held under the slogan ‘Read More,’ it takes the pencil as its symbol and will host the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) as its Guest of Honour.
SIBF’s journey towards being a leading cultural project first began on in 1982, with His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi inaugurating it under the slogan ‘Read… You Are in Sharjah.’ Subsequent editions started implementing a wider cultural project, which has established the annual event as a major destination in the Arab cultural arena. It now ranks as a major attraction for authors and publishers across the world, as well as the general public in the UAE who are keen to expand their cultural horizons. SIBF’s successful integration with other cultural projects have helped promote Sharjah as the Cultural Capital of the Arab World.
