A great success for Dallah Hospital Al-Nakheel in treating various cases of spinal deformities

The disease of spinal deformities, known as "scoliosis", is one of the complex and prevalent pathological conditions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Dallah Hospital Al-Nakheel in Riyadh was able to treat many cases of this disease, for patients of different ages from inside and outside the Kingdom.

It is noteworthy that cases of scoliosis need accurate diagnosis and treatment, especially if they are associated with neuromuscular disorders, where initial and early checking is required, and this disease affects females more than males.

And Prof. Abdulmonem bin Muhammad Al-Siddiky, consultant pediatric scoliosis surgeon at Dallah Hospital Al-Nakheel has spoken, about the types of scoliosis, its causes, symptoms, and how to treat its various cases, explaining that the disease may sometimes be accompanied by cases of cerebral palsy, which are more complex than other cases, due to the difficulties and challenges it causes. It leaves the patient in a state of cognitive deficiency, developmental delay, with muscle and nerve weakness.

Prof. Abdulmonem Al-Siddiky explained that this disease sometimes leads to movement difficulties for the patient, as well as difficulty in understanding and communicating with others, and is often accompanied by deviations in the spine, as a result of weakness in the bones and muscles, and this in turn represents a challenge in the installation of medical tools and the use of surgical tools, and in fixing the screws as well, along with the challenge of chiropractic, indicating that the deviations often have a rigid aspect due to the stiffness and inflexibility of the spine, and this leads to an inclination in the back and an imbalance in the shoulders, as well as an imbalance in the patient’s pelvis.

Regarding the stages of scoliosis diagnosis, Prof. Abdulmonem Al-Siddiky explained that the method of diagnosis in different cases requires an initial clinical examination on the back and of the height of the shoulders, and the specialist doctor may, in some cases and prior to the necessary treatment, request an X-ray to diagnose the disease and measure the angle of deviation, as well as CT scans and resonance imaging to ensure the integrity of the cord and spine.

Prof. Abdulmonem Al-Siddiky discussed the causes of scoliosis, which are neuromuscular disorders that affect muscles and nerves, as well as cerebral palsy, muscle atrophy, or as a result of a congenital defect or genetic mutation. There are other causes of this disease, most notably spinal muscular atrophy. As for the symptoms of the disease, the most prominent of them is a clear curvature in the back, and the head is not centered in the middle of the body, in addition to the asymmetry of the rib cage, and one hip protruding more than the other.

In his talk about this disease, Prof. Abdulmonem Al-Siddiky reviewed its various types, the most common of which is idiopathic scoliosis, the exact causes of which are not known, as well as congenital scoliosis, neuromuscular scoliosis, and finally degenerative scoliosis, which appears in the lower back, where the parts and joints of the spine begin to erode, especially in advanced age, pointing out that the treatment center in Dallah Al-Nakheel, with its qualified consultants and specialists in treatment, anesthesia, surgery and nursing, treats all these types of disease, as it has become one of the hospitals recognized for its efficiency and is visited by patients from all over the Kingdom and abroad.

It is worth noting that Dallah Hospital Al-Nakheel, under the supervision of Prof. Abdulmonem Al-Siddiky, a consultant pediatric orthopedist and a consultant for scoliosis and spinal deformities for children and adults, has performed several successful spine and straightening operations for patients from inside and outside the Kingdom.

Among the recent cases conducted by the Hospital was a 14-year-old patient who was suffering from cerebral palsy, severe scoliosis and inclination of the spine. The spine was fully straightened and adjusted quickly and efficiently, as the surgery took only 4 hours. After that, the patient recovered and became able to function independently, and she left the hospital 4 days after the surgery.

It is worth mentioning that Dallah Health Group comprises six pioneering health care facilities, serving more than 1.5 million patients annually, throughout the KSA, via more than 900 beds and 500 outpatient clinics. The Group employs more than 3,000 employees, including around 1,000 specialists, in its effort to provide the highest standards of health care in the KSA.
