ACWA Power announced it began today construction of the Biruni independent power plant project in Karakalpakstan, Uzbekistan.
The project includes the construction of a 200 MW wind power plant and a 100 MW battery storage system in the Biruni region of Karakalpakstan.
The investment value of the Biruni project is $ 260 million (SAR 1 billion), and it is being implemented in partnership with Uzbekistan's National Electricity Grid.
When fully developed, the project will produce 800 million kilowatt hours of clean energy annually, which will provide electricity to about 292,000 homes. It will also provide 212 million cubic meters of natural gas, in addition to reducing carbon emissions by 336,000 tons annually, according to a statement by the company.
In August, 2022, ACWA Power signed heads of terms agreement with Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Energy and Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade for a 1,500 MW wind power project in Karakalpakstan, Uzbekistan, at a value of about $2.4 billion, data available to Argaam showed.
