Aus Celebrates The Academic Success Of 430 Outstanding Students At Annual Honors Convocation

American University of Sharjah (AUS) celebrated the academic achievements of 430 of its distinguished students at the Honors Convocation ceremony held virtually on November 5. The convocation, which was attended by university officials, friends and family, is one the most important events on the university’s calendar.  

Ninety-two outstanding students received the Gold Medal, which is given to those being recognized at the Honors Convocation for the third or fourth time. One hundred and seven students received the Silver Medal, which is awarded to students making their second appearance on the prestigious honors list while 231 students were presented with the Bronze Medal for their first appearance at the event. Out of the total number of students honored this year, 286 were women and 144 were men.

The Honors Convocation recognizes and celebrates the achievements of AUS students who attained a GPA of 3.5 in the Fall 2019 and Spring 2020 semesters, qualifying them for inclusion on the Chancellor's List. In addition, the students must have been registered in a minimum of 15 credit hours, had no incomplete or failing grades in any courses and had no disciplinary action against them. In addition to being recognized at the Honors Convocation, students are awarded the Chancellor’s List Scholarship. 

Among the honorees were four exceptional students who received the prestigious Sheikh Khalifa Scholarships. Awarded to juniors and seniors, the scholarship recognizes academic excellence, leadership potential, service to community, demonstrated talent in the field of study and participation in extracurricular and university activities. Given through an annual competition conducted within each college/school, it is granted for up to four consecutive semesters or until graduation requirements are complete.

This year’s recipients of the Sheikh Khalifa Scholarships were Julia Najah Fhaili from the College of Architecture, Art and Design; Katia Khalil Kanakri from the College of Arts and Sciences; Mohammed Fawzi Kharroub from the College of Engineering; and Julia Jose from the School of Business Administration.  

The Chancellor’s List Scholarship and the Sheikh Khalifa Scholarships are part of a comprehensive need- and merit-based financial assistance program offered by AUS. Each year, approximately 70 percent of students benefit from support provided by the university. 

Congratulating the students on their success, Professor Kevin Mitchell, Chancellor of AUS, said: “I would like to extend my congratulations to all of the students who are being honored for their academic performance. The fact that you have continued to excel despite the current challenges is a significant achievement. All of you who are being honored have demonstrated your ability to succeed in challenging circumstances and your perseverance is commendable.”
