Cars exclusively for women on Riyadh Metro proposed

The Municipal Council of Riyadh has proposed that there should be cars exclusively for women on Riyadh Metro, work on which is underway, according to an online newspaper.

Hassan Al-Moosa, assistant director of transport planning administration in the Supreme Authority for the Development of Riyadh, said that there would three types of cars: executive class; for families; and for individuals.
Members of the Municipal Council of Riyadh have presented a number of problems and proposals before the authority in its meeting which was held on Thursday. A number of members sought cars reserved for ladies.
The work on the massive transport project, with a cost of $22.5 billion, is underway in Riyadh. The work on the urban rail and bus systems for the capital is on track, as was announced by Riyadh Gov. Prince Faisal bin Bandar earlier this week.
After inspecting various parts of the project, Prince Faisal said: “The project is going very well,” and according to plan. He said that one-third of the metro is now complete.
The metro’s six lines will cover 176km, supported by a bus network of 1,150 km. About 40 percent of the system will be underground. Work on the elevated part of the railway is noticeable throughout the sprawling city of 5.7 million people, where concrete supports and railway platforms are going up.
Once operational, the metro is expected to become the main transport means for daily commuters, both male and female. The multibillion-riyal Riyadh Metro will create 23,000 jobs for citizens during the construction and operation phases.
The metro project is being discussed among government departments as well as among the people of Riyadh. Discussions in the municipal council are about its facilities, which is being seen as a reflection of people’s keenness for it. The issue had come up for discussion in the council along with a number of other issues of the city.
