Chelsea College of Arts (CCA) returns to the Middle East with its Short Course programme from 9 - 28 May 2016 at its new venue – the Dubai Design District, d3. With a presence in the region for five years, CCA is bringing 12 short courses to the region, four of which have never been offered in the UAE before. 

 

Starting an Interior Design Business

 

20 – 22 May 2016

In this short course, tutor Matteo Bianchi will provide students with the essential skills to manage and grow their budding business. With a defined special area of focus in product design, Matteo will help guide students through the process of managing a project from start to finish. 

 

Hotel Interior Design

As a hotspot destination, the GCC hospitality industry is set to reach $35.9 billion by 2018, and CCA are responding to that by introducing a five day course on hotel design. Through a series of practical exercises, combined with lectures from guest speakers and industry professionals, students will gain an overview of all aspects of hotel design.

 

Bespoke Furniture Design

Bespoke furniture design will explore the design of bespoke, freestanding furniture within the context of interior design. From exploring different approaches to idea generation all the way through to functionality and aesthetics, this course will see furniture designs through the conceptual phases. 

 

Lighting Design Concepts

Lighting is an essential and often deprioritised aspect of any design scheme. This course is an introduction to residential lighting, walking through the principles ahead of creating a simple lighting scheme, mood board, and lighting plan and specification. 

 

Soft Furnishings

This one day course will address the role of soft furnishings in interior design, including window treatments, upholstery and cushions. With a briefing on the terminology of the trade, students will be fully immersed into the world of textiles.  

 

3D Digital Design with SketchUp

3D digital design with SketchUp will teach students how to quickly and easily create 3D drawings of their designs, and is a crucial skill in any design practice. This will significantly enhance the students’ professional communication and presentation of their designs.

 

Principles of Interior Design 1

Students will quickly learn there is much more to interior design than choosing fabrics and colours. Course tutor Lyndall Fernie will place an emphasis on developing practical skills and guiding students through the three-dimensional thinking used to professionally communicate with future clients.

 

Principles of Interior Design 2

This is a chance to hone analytical skills and develop a personal design methodology. Students will be encouraged to study and use design references while work is done to improve technical drawing. An introduction will be made to complex design issues and the challenges of designing for the domestic environment.

 

Critical Theory in Contemporary Art Practice

Through lectures, seminars, tutorials and gallery visits, students will familiarise themselves with key concepts and historical transformations underpinning twentieth century art production and reception. Students will extend and develop their ability to discuss, write about and judge contemporary art.

 

Curating 1

This course will introduce students to the enormous scope of contemporary art practice internationally, investigating the role of the curator within this field. From looking into current critical discourse on the subject of curating, to the practical skills that are necessary, the course will focus on the social, political, philosophical and aesthetic concerns that arise from engaging in this area.

Over this course students will learn how to approach artists, discuss their practice within a studio visit situation, disseminate key information surrounding the artist’s work into various media, propose ideas for staging an exhibition and ultimately build an exhibition proposal of a professional standard.

 

Introduction to the Art Market

This course focuses on physical experiences with art combined with visits to galleries and access to corporate and public collections. The course will offer a theoretical investigation as well as plenty of practical advice on collecting temporary art, looking into the logic of the art market and what drives this peculiar economy.
