Dubai 100 announces winner of Shanghai bootcamp

Dubai 100, a global pre accelerator based in Dubai, has announced the winner of its first regional bootcamp in Shanghai, China, as MoDoo, a digital health startup which has developed an innovative wearable device that passively monitors foetal heartrate and movements during pregnancy.

Dubai 100 launched in January 2016 to support the UAE’s national innovation strategy by bringing young digital health innovators from around the world to Dubai to test and accelerate solutions for global challenges. The Dubai 100 Bootcamp brings a condensed programme to key cities around the world to support collaboration between innovation hubs and provide a global platform for young entrepreneurs to access international perspectives and opportunities.

MoDoo, which uses revolutionary technology to passively monitor foetal heartrate and movement using a small wearable patch, was announced as the winner of the Shanghai bootcamp on Friday 28 October following a hotly contested pitch competition. As well as securing $10,000 equity-free funding, the start-up from Beijing was awarded a place on the intensive 100-day programme in Dubai, starting January 2017.

Taking place during Dubai Week in China, an event exploring Dubai’s role as a global gateway for economic development and cultural exchange, the Dubai 100 Bootcamp in Shanghai builds on the twin cities’ shared focus on supporting innovation and entrepreneurship as a driver for future growth.

Roland Daher, Head of Dubai 100 commented: “Healthcare is an important growth market in China, making it a natural home for our first regional bootcamp, which highlights Dubai as a powerful testbed for Chinese digital health startups, whether they are seeking to grow their home advantage or reach international opportunities.  By connecting these young entrepreneurs to Dubai’s regional and global network we hope to support game-changing innovations that shape the future of healthcare worldwide.”

Dr Amer Ahmad Sharif, CEO of Dubai Healthcare City Authority – Education Sector (DHCE), joined the Dubai 100 judging panel and commented: “Healthcare is a core focus of Dubai and the UAE’s innovation strategies and an area of fast growth and potential. We are investing in the best talent, training and innovative ideas to support Dubai’s goals and to help solve health challenges facing the world. The calibre of China’s digital health startups is been world-class and I look forward to exploring further opportunities for collaboration between our healthcare communities.”

During the bootcamp, eight startups from across China gained world-class mentorship from Dubai 100’s global network including venture capitalists, strategy consultants, healthcare experts and successful entrepreneurs from Dubai, China, Europe and the US. Among the mentors was Verena Kretschmann, co-founder of Anvajo, a former Dubai 100 startup now undergoing its first major round of fundraising.

Two additional start-ups, Healthme and AméSanté, both from Shanghai, were highly commended and also offered places on the pre-accelerator after impressing the judging panel of investors and healthcare experts. Healthme is creating the world’s thinnest smart thermometer targeted at parents to continuously monitor their child’s temperature when they have a fever, whilst AmeSante has developed a smart nutrition service for Gestational Diabetes.  They will join teams selected from around the world to unlock global opportunities through clinical trials, investment and partnerships.

During the weekend, Dubai 100 also launched recruitment in the UAE for its January 2017 programme during a meetup with top young designers exhibiting at the Global Grad Show, for which Dubai 100 is the entrepreneurship partner.
