Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), the Emirate's dedicated entity for heritage, arts and culture, has successfully wrapped up its ‘Reading Corner’ installation at the 2016 edition of Modhesh World. The ‘Reading Corner’ by Dubai’ Culture’s Centre of Studies and Research, focused on inspiring children and young adults from across Dubai to pick up a book and read over the summer period, and included an extensive array of books and magazines written for children in both English and Arabic.
The ‘Reading Corner’ also offered the chance to participate in reading sessions supervised by specialists, and a wide range of stimulating activities including painting, colouring and entertaining competitions such as the Modhesh World Young Author Award 2016 - launched by Modhesh World, in partnership with Emarat Al Youm newspaper and Arabian Radio Network.
Dr. Salah AlQassim , Advisor , Dubai Culture & Arts Authority said: ‘’Modhesh World provided us with the perfect opportunity to connect with children, in order to inspire them to expand their knowledge through reading. This activity was carried out under the Authority’s overarching aim of building a new generation that is qualified to build a strong and stable future for the Emirate.”
and he added: “The ‘Reading Corner’ featured a wide variety of books focusing on the UAE’s culture and heritage - supporting the Authority’s main goals of supporting and celebrating Emirati heritage, nurturing talent, and supporting cultural diversity and social cohesion.”
Modhesh World, which was held from 27th June to 27th August 2016 at the Dubai World Trade Centre, was a key feature of Dubai Summer Surprises. The festival has become an extremely popular destination for family entertainment during the Dubai summer season, and each year the event attracts more than 500,000 visitors.
This ‘Reading Corner’ was just one of many initiatives by Dubai Culture to support the UAE’s 2016 Year of Reading - a government programme designed to support an integrated national literacy strategy, to provide a framework which produces a generation with a passion for reading, and to establish the UAE as the capital of cultural and knowledge content. Furthermore, the Authority’s Modhesh World initiative is in line with its strategic vision to turn Dubai into a cultural hub, establishing the Emirate as a global centre for creativity, and enhancing the Emirate’s cultural identity both locally and globally.
