Emirati lady gives birth to quadruplets at Danat Al Emarat Hospital in Abu Dhabi

An Emirati lady recently gave birth to quadruplets—three boys and a girl—at Danat Al Emarat Hospital for Women & Children in Abu Dhabi. The babies were delivered in the 31st week of pregnancy and weighed between 1.2 Kg and 1.4 Kg. Mother and babies are in good health and are discharged from the hospital.

The mother has been closely monitored since her first trimester of pregnancy at the hospital’s Obstetrics Department and Fetal Medicine Unit. A caesarean section in the 31st week of gestation was performed by the obstetrician in the presence of four neonatologists to take care of the babies as soon as they took their first breath.

Mohammed Ali Al Shorafa Al Hammadi, CEO and Managing Director of United Eastern Medical Services (UEMedical), said “We are delighted the quadruplets were delivered at Danat Al Emarat hospital, an evident of the hospital’s competency and quality of care offered by our highly experienced physicians and clinical staff.”

“Danat Al Emarat Hospital’s advanced Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, is crucial and plays a vital role in dealing with rare and complicated cases including multiple pregnancies. Accredited by the Health Authority Abu Dhabi as level III NICU, the unit provides advanced technologies led by highly skilled, qualified and competent medical team,” Mr. Al Shorafa added.

He further added, “taking care of the quadruplets from the mother’s first trimester of pregnancy to discharging the babies from the NICU is yet another milestone and achievement for Danat Al Emarat Hospital in its first year of operations as we mark the hospital’s first year anniversary in few weeks from now.”

Dr. Rihan Saafan, Obstetrics & Gynecology Consultant at Danat Al Emarat Hospital, who performed the C-section, said that the mother first visited the hospital at her 12th week of pregnancy. As we confirmed her pregnancy with the quadruplets, the hospital developed a thorough and comprehensive monitoring plan, supervised by a multi-disciplinary team of physicians. The mother also underwent regular checkups and was monitored at the fetal medicine unit to ensure the fetuses’ wellbeing and to track their growth and development.

She added, “A C-section was decided on her 31st week of pregnancy, to insure her safety and the wellbeing of her babies. Upon receiving the consent of the quadruplets’ parents, the hospital made the arrangements and preparations needed for the C-section, and everyone at the hospital was highly attentive. Our Neonatology department prepared 4 incubators for the quadruplets given that they were premature and weighed less than normal due to their early delivery, which requires admitting them to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit until they weigh more than 1.8 – 2 Kg and were healthy.”

“During the C-section, the mother was under spinal anesthesia and the father was present throughout the procedure. Four of our neonatologists took care of the babies as soon as they were delivered conducting the required checkups,” Dr. Rihan Saafan explained.

From his side, Dr. Iviano Ossuetta, Neonatologist and Head of Pediatrics & Neonatology Department stated, “the first baby weighed 1200 gm, the second 1450 gm, the third 1460 gm and the fourth weighed 1310 gm, and they stayed at the NICU for more than 40 days and were discharged healthy and each weighing more than 2 kg. Two of the babies needed breathing support for few days.”

He also emphasized that the checkups performed for the quadruplets showed that they were in good health and they had no complications after their discharge from the hospital.

The father of the quadruplets, S. A., was so joyful and named the babies Khalifa, Mohammed, Hamdan and Fatima as their birth coincided with the return of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, to the country last month.

“I was speechless when I found out my wife was pregnant with quadruplets. The day of her delivery was an extraordinary day. I was keen on being with her in the delivery room, along with the medical and clinical staff, and was surprised to find the hospital’s management celebrating this event with us in a unique manner, and my wife was moved to a special suite decorated with roses and chocolates,” he added.

He explained that when he was notified his wife was pregnant with quadruplets, he and his wife decided to continue receiving care during the pregnancy and to give birth at Danat Al Emarat Hospital which is known for its quality services and because of the remarkable care his wife was given since she entered the hospital for the first time and throughout her pregnancy.

“We felt comfortable, confident and at ease. We did not tell the rest of the family and our friends that we were having quadruplets. We are thankful to Allah that our quadruplets are in good health and are joining our other children,” he added.

He also pointed out that, on the day of the delivery, he was keen on distributing 200 roses to the medical and nursing teams as well as the management in appreciation of the special attention they gave his wife and the quadruplets.

Dr. Thomas Kunt, Chief Medical Officer at Danat Al Emarat Hospital stated, “delivering quadruplets is not as simple. There are plenty of necessary arrangements and preparations that need to be done from the obstetricians to the team of neonatologists and nurses. Our 20-bed NICU at Danat Al Emarat Hospital, in addition to the advanced fetal medicine unit that are led by experienced medical staff largely contributed to the success of this rare delivery.”

“The team at Danat Al Emarat Hospital, which is part of United Eastern Medical Services Group, works as one team, and what further enriched the team’s performance was the medical equipment and advanced technologies available at the hospital, which are comparable to international standards,” Dr. Kunt concluded.
