The Sharjah-based organisation dedicated to promoting media arts among children and the youth gave teenage participants a wonderful opportunity to test their creativity and in the process, pick up essential technical skills vital to the fields of media and filmmaking during the two-day Film Poster Design Workshop.
A group of ten young media enthusiasts’ aged 14- to 18 years old spent a couple of days at the Emirates Photography Society in Sharjah learning the basics of poster design, specifically the ones used for film. The two-day workshop was designed in a way that the participants’ journey of learning was not characterised by the technical aspects of design alone. The larger aim was to empower the youth with the capability to first recognise and then delve deeper into their individual artistic capabilities, realising their creative vision through the technical training they received.
“With our innovative hands-on approach to teaching, the workshop participants found themselves completely immersed in their course of study, surrounded by expert faculty and working with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. The curriculum for the two-days was designed to reflect a real-world environment, where we believe many of our students will find themselves in the near future, while encouraging them to ask questions, and express creativity fearlessly,” said Sheikha Jawaher Bint Abdullah Al Qassimi, Director of FUNN and SCIFF.
“The larger goal of this workshop and all others that FUNN organises is to empower the future generations to explore and express their creativity freely, and to equip them with the practical and theoretical knowledge in the media arts in ways that will enable them to tap fully into their potential, and use it as a vehicle to convey their message to the world.”
On the second day of the workshop, participants got to pick the movie they wanted to design the poster for, and some of them chose their own – one’s they had created in the past with FUNN. They applied all the photoshop and other design skills they picked up on the first day of the workshop to create their movie posters.
FUNN aims to nurture a future generation of creative artists in media and film, and promotes new media works and films made by children and young filmmakers of the UAE at international film festivals, and conferences worldwide. Their larger goal is to foster talent through these festivals, conferences and workshops locally and internationally, and form a close-knit network of talented young people who can share experiences and expertise on a global scale.
