Govt warns against quick-money schemes

The Ministry of Interior has cautioned citizens against hoax phone calls which make fake offers promising instant monetary gains.
The cautionary note came in the wake of reports by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that said that several citizens had been tricked into parting with huge sums of money following the receipt of unidentified telephone calls from people claiming to be employees of well-known trading companies abroad, MoI sources said Thursday.

The sources added that those making the hoax calls claim to offer instant profits, citing huge turnovers thereby escalating public interest in these trading companies. They warned that the calls are not made from authentic addresses.

“The ministry called on citizens to be cautious about any communication coming to their personal phones promoting the operation of funds in shares of companies or business practices,” the sources said.

According to the reports, the people involved in this scam are operating from abroad using fake calls or online communication to try to get money from people illegally. They may also be attempting to gain credit card or bank account details of their victims, the sources warned.
