A staff member of the Jeddah-based King Abdulaziz University (KAU) has been granted a patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for creating a new cognitive radio sensing method, according to local media.

Dr. Ahmed M. Barnawi of the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology at KAU has reportedly conducted his work using the software-defined radio technology.
Barnawi said the importance of the work lies in facilitating the sensing process through the use of radio software, and it has been tested and proved to be successful.

He said that the development of the idea took nearly six months, and that he began work on the project individually in 2009 when he received a scholarship from a Canadian university, where he exchanged views with researchers there on the project.
The invention relates to radio systems and adds wireless voice and data communications to a cognitive radio sensing method to create a system that is capable of changing its operating parameters in response to a changing and unanticipated radio environment.

It also performs all cognitive functions using a wideband chirp signal to reduce computational complexity.
Barnawi said that the registration of the patent took nearly three years, according to local media sources.
