More flights to underserved areas planned

The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) has launched a plan to have domestic airlines operate flights to underserved areas in the country.

Sulaiman Al-Hamdan, GACA president, said Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman has asked the organization to ensure these services are provided across the nation.
Al-Hamdan said the plan is to use some airports as hubs that would connect to all provinces. He made the announcement after a meeting with senior officials from Saudi Arabian Airlines, Nas Air and Gulf Air.

He said there might be support given to Saudi Arabian Airlines so that it can fulfill this vision. GACA has chosen Hail Airport as the first hub because of its strategic location in the north of the Kingdom.

He said Hail was a pilot project that would be extended to other parts of the country if successful.
