The Ministry of Education has urged the Ministry of Civil Service to increase the number of social workers in public schools to handle cases of violence in or outside the institutions. Education departments in the Kingdom addressed the issue by assigning teachers not specialized in sociology and not familiar with cases of violence, a source quoted by local media said.
Dr. Khalid Al-Fakhri, deputy secretary-general of the National Society for Human Rights (NSHR), has been quoted as saying that the organisation deals with such cases of violence reported by male and female teachers to social workers who have to be present at the school.
Al-Fakhri stressed that social workers should be aware of the protection mechanisms and be capable of handling cases within the purview of existing norms and reporting the same to the NSHR.
According to the official, the child protection system focuses on the welfare of children, a matter that weighs responsibility on government and private schools or other institutions that shelter children for education or training.
