School year ends early in some areas

Education Minister Azzam Al-Dakhil issued orders Thursday to end the school year for all schools located along the southern border, as a precautionary measure against any emergency situation in the region.

Directors of schools along the border in Najran, Asir, Jazan, Sobya and Surah Abedia instructed staff of schools located along the Saudi-Yemeni border to end modules for all elementary school students, and certify them based on work already assigned and completed thus far.

The decision also includes issuing second semester grades of middle school students based on results of the first semester. Students who failed in the first semester's assessment will be given a choice to either repeat examinations at another school or retake exams once schools reopen.

High school students should sit exams at other schools based on current situations of these schools, according to the decision.
As for final year students and the impact on their applications to universities, the ministry said it is asking universities to consider their unusual circumstances, and urged universities to accept students as far as their capacities allow.

Al-Dakhil called on other schools located farther from the border region to operate classes as normal, until the ministry announces otherwise.
For shifting teachers employed at border schools, the ministry said the situation will be monitored in each area in order to provide teachers with necessary support, access to computers, training and transportation stipends.
