Second Global Aviation and Aerospace Skills Task Force Meeting concludes in Abu Dhabi

The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) successfully hosted the second meeting of the Global Aviation and Aerospace Skills Task Force (GAAST) in Abu Dhabi from 18th to 22nd November 2024.

The event brought together key stakeholders from member states, industry leaders, and international organisations to address the pressing need to develop the aviation and aerospace workforce to support growth and future skills needs.

The meeting emphasised strengthening cooperation among GAAST members, particularly between states and industry stakeholders, to develop effective strategies and initiatives.

In a significant step toward aligning GAAST’s objectives with global aviation priorities, the UAE extended an invitation to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) to attend the meeting as an observer. This move reinforces GAAST’s commitment to supporting ICAO’s Next Generation of Aviation Professionals (NGAP) and No Country Left Behind (NCLB) initiatives. The outcomes of the discussions will contribute to ICAO’s 42nd Assembly in Autumn 2025, driving impactful global dialogue and action.

Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director-General of GCAA, reaffirmed the UAE’s dedication to fostering international cooperation. He stated, “The UAE strongly believes in the power of collaboration to address global challenges. Hosting the GAAST meeting reflects our commitment to ensuring the sustainability of the aviation industry by developing the skills and capabilities required for its future growth. We are proud to support GAAST’s vital work and its alignment with ICAO’s initiatives.”

Nina Brooks, Chairperson of GAAST, highlighted the task force’s crucial mission, expressing gratitude for the UAE’s exceptional hospitality and leadership. “GAAST plays a pivotal role in addressing the critical skills needs for the aviation and aerospace industry worldwide. This meeting has been instrumental in driving forward our collective goals. On behalf of GAAST, I extend our heartfelt thanks to the UAE for hosting this event and providing an inspiring platform for progress.”

The meeting in Abu Dhabi provided a collaborative environment to advance discussions on strategic workforce planning, training, and capacity-building initiatives, ensuring that the aviation and aerospace sectors remain resilient and prepared for future challenges.
