The curtain was drawn on the 16th stage of the 100th Giro d’Italia today with UAE Team Emirates’ Jan Polanc moving up in the General Classification to place 13th. Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) won the dramatic Queen Stage of the Giro d’Italia, beating Mikel Landa (Team Sky) in a two-up sprint while Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb) keeps the General Classification lead.
Spanish rider Mikel Landa Meanda (Team Sky) was the first to crest the Passo Dello Stelvio at 2,758 meters to claim the Cima Coppi prize, a prize for being the first rider over the highest point in the Giro.
Commenting on the stage, UAE Team Emirates’ Climber Jan Polanc said: “Today the stage was extremely tough. It felt like the last mountain climb and descent were never ending. I am exhausted and so is the team. However, a good effort was shown from the team and Costa and Ravasi succeeded in being part of the main breakaway of 25 riders.”
Wednesday will mark the 17th stage – 219 km long starting in Tirano with a few technical climbs, such as Aprica and Passo del Tonale. A long descent then takes the peloton across the Val di Sole. The route goes up again in the second half and climbs slightly in the last 5 km with a short descent leading all the way to the finish in Canazei.
