The American University of Ras Al Khaimah hosted the 16th UAE Mathday, featuring keynote speakers: Salah-Eddine Kabbaj of King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, and Nader Masmoudi of New York University.
The UAE Mathday is one of the largest math conferences in the UAE, where academics from all over the world gather in the UAE to share and discuss their research. Each year a different university has the honor of organizing and hosting the prestigious conference; this year the 16th UAE Mathday was hosted for the first time by the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of AURAK. This year’s conference consisted of the two keynote speakers, forty-five abstracts, and more than one hundred guests from various academic institutions.
The conference commenced with a welcoming speech delivered by the Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Dr. Ali Maalaoui, who introduced AURAK’s Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost, Prof. Stephen Wilhite. In his speech the provost insisted on the importance of mathematics and research for many different fields and urged the audience to reflect on implementing these new findings in their teaching curriculum.
The main keynote speaker was Prof. Nader Masmoudi, from the NYU-Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, who is now visiting NYUAD and is the 2018 Laureate of the Fermat Prize. Professor Nader Masmoudi’s presentation was entitled “Recent Progress in the Study of the Prandtl System and the Zero Viscocity Limit.”
In addition to the main keynote speaker, the conference involved five different parallel sessions related to different fields of mathematics, ranging from analysis to general mathematics and math education.
The Interim Dean of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Mustapha Merabet, was very pleased with the conference in that it represented the materialization of the university’s strategic goals, namely to promote the personal and professional development of faculty and staff. It also established connections with regional and international businesses and educational institutions that will address the educational needs of AURAK students in the future.
AURAK President, Prof. Hassan Hamdan Al Alkim, is pleased that AURAK is able to be a platform for conferences like these where ideas can be shared and research can be advanced
